Have you had a good week? Mine has been spent running between the shop and my office, dodging Coco and her arsenal of tennis balls (land minds around the shop) and trying to convince customers that receiving their product a few days late will be OK (but it won't.)
I'm happy to say we're busy and I hope this continues through December, but in some ways I'd like it to slow down just enough to have time to finish my mosaic (it's still not grouted) and decide which dog to pimp out for my Christmas cards (Coco!)
I did finish my video of my trip to "Chickory" which made me happy because it's been hard to articulate to family/friends just what I did during my three days in Georgia. It's difficult to explain the smell of the woods, the sounds of the chickens. It's been a struggle to say why gathering wood for a bonfire and stacking rocks around the fire pit were some of the best moments I've spent in a long time.
In a year that has been punctuated with restless sleep and insomnia,
I slept solid through the night. Lulled by the sound of the creek and crickets.
Tonight as I opened the door to my house and stumbled over my suitcase it was hard to believe that a week ago tonight I was just beginning my trip. As I stepped around my bag I saw a pine cone I had picked up during one of my walks and I held it to my nose, hoping to breathe in one last taste of my trip. I hate losing the memory of smell.
I'll be back for Mute Monday. The theme is Favorites.
Have a great weekend. XOXO.

"No ones gonna eat it, it's a goddamn beet!"
Well, I think that just about says it all, don't you?!
A bear ... lol
I understand that smell you talk about.
It's close to some of the smells of Florida I miss.
The pines, scrub, fruit trees.
Nothing like fresh country air to knock you out.
Better than any pharmaceutical I know.
Ha! I can't get enough of the chickens!
That countryside reminds me of where I grew up in Southeast Texas.
Happy weekend.
chucklin' heah ove mah cawfee thinkin' on you two hilarious wimmen--MORE Please!!
A WOOODCHUCK???
I happen to know that Chickory is the sorta place whar' moles come up outa the ground to eat yore banana if youse jes' sittin' peacefully in the sun. HOOOWWWWLLL!
Thanky fer this peek into the best three days. I is still gigglin'--an' great music fer the theme.
Poor Country Cousin of Chef Beet. Just abandoned in the field. I bet if you were hungry enough you'd eat it, Scarlet.
There's nothing better than deep, uninterrupted sleep, especially if you've been missing it for awhile. Glad you got to do the video too. Those apples in the baskets look great. Finally, you better start training Coco immediately if you're going to dress her out for the Xmas card . . . Have a great weekend Boxer.
see? God does provide, yet ye turneth up ye nose at the blessed beet. grrrrrrrrrhahahahaha
it was fun to see my home through the artists eye! i loved it.
haha aunty. maybe a hedgehog. or ... a woodchuck?
dear God i hate hearing my voice on video. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaacccccck!
thanks boxer. xoxox come back anytime.
leonid meteor shower early tuesday morning!
forgot to say: i am really really glad your business is busy. i know you are tired, but it is a blessing. you'll get back to the mosaic, and i cant wait to see it finished, but at least you have a fun shop dog to help you laugh the hours away. i wish you restful sleep and i wish i could bottle the forest fragrance and ship it to you.
I liked the patriotic gate. All sorts of critters eat beet greens.
Awesome video Boxer!
That's it, I'm moving to Chicory.
I can work in the garden and I'LL eat the Goddamn Beets!
I made a martini out of my beet vodka last night...with cocktail onions and a bit of their juice. Awesome.
Great stuff as always.
Love the video, completely dig the song (what is it?) and how funny is the beet (not the beat) ...!!!! Yummy southern cooking, a bit of southern preachifying, sweet chickies and chickens. Great weekend.
Scarlet - smell is one of those things that is so evocative and hard to bring home from a trip/home. For me, it's the smell of salt water. I'd miss that if I weren't here. Have a great weekend.
XL - I could make chicken videos for the next six months and be very happy. They are funny and sweet. And smart.
Aunty - Whaaaa? Moles come out of the ground? I'd love to put night goggles on and walk around there at night. I have a feeling I'd see MANY blinking eyes/things looking at me. Have a great weekend.
Shamu - BWHAHAAHAH. K9's the one who tossed it into the woods after her challenge was finished. And you know what? Nothing ate that thing the entire time I was there. I checked.
2$ - I actually bought a santa hat for Coco this week but then remembered my rule about no clothes on the dogs. I'm wondering if antlers would work?
K9 - I don't like my voice either, but that passage from the bible (and you having to explain it to me) was really lovely and helped set the tone for my trip. I'm so envious of your dark sky. You can see the Milky Way anytime you want. Amazing.
Troll - those beets were still there when I left. And I bet they're still there now. And will be there next week. The gate is cool. I agree.
Dani - thanks for coming by and watching it. :-)
Gnomey - We all deserve to dream of a time/place where we have our "Chickory". Maybe we should have brought that beet back in the house and made your beet vodka. I'm going to go back and read Troll's recipe and try to make it.
Pam - I maintain that our country is beautiful, diverse and we should all spend time visiting/exploring it. Everyone I met was lovely and that lunch? Oh.My. I had been at the Top Chef restaurant in Atlanta the night before and I thought my apple dessert at the country cafe was equally amazing. No joke.
but not the pumpkin curry soup. gah!
Hey, K9, I make a mean pumpkin and curry soup! No lie, girl :o)
Man, I laughed so hard at that last bit with the beet, I'm crying. And, kicking myself for not being able to make it. But I'm over the moon happy you two had such a splendid time. And I gotta say, Big Dog for letting y'all drive up in the Corinthian Leather Mobile? Totally cool!
P.S. Great song you chose, BTW. I can't believe I actually suggested "Destroyer." Well, you did say Hard and Loud :o)
When life gives you (goddam) beets, make borscht!
i am so happy y'all had a great visit in georgia, sugar! xoxoxo
Troll calls for 1lb of beets...not sure that much is really necessary. 1 or 2 beets will do. It gets red fast!
My next batch might even have an onion added.
K9 - many people were asking for the recipe but when you told me to "dump it" I did. And thanks for the words regarding time in the future for my projects.
Moi - I loved your song suggestions and still believe your ability to detect Corinthian leather from a photo puts you in a category all by yourself. Wow. When I saw those beets in the woods I was laughing so hard and impressed with K9 for even getting into the challenge. NOTHING is close in her world and she drove a long way to get those.
MJ - or Beet vodka?
Savannah - Your city is next on my list. When I come back, I'm spending time driving all over the state of Georiga. It's beautiful.
Gnome - jeez, 1/4 of a beet bled all over my counter. Can you taste the beet in the vodka? Tell me why you like the beet vodka. Inquiring minds want to know.
Maybe I need to pay Georgia another visit. Pretty much the only memories I have from my first trip there are a rather smelly bus ride (aren't they all?), and seeing a car on fire on the freeway (seems someone was transporting a barbecue that decided to ignite the entire truck).
That will be my new catch phrase, "It's a goddamn beet."
God loves me more than a sparrow. I'm probably worth 2 or 3 sparrows to God.
Yes, you can taste the beet in the vodka...in fact, the vodka tastes a lot like vodka...with beets.
I hear that parsnip vodka tastes a lot like turnips...but the beet stuff just tastes like beets. :-)
I like beets.
Boxer,
I am curious did the Chickory mission trip help you to ,
"Let go of the remote control" ?
I too have wished I could bottle the smell of a good place. If you cannot take the smell with you.... maybe you could get K9 to make a recording of the night sounds and her reading from Matthew. Good sleeping is so restorative.
So glad it was a good trip. Can hardly wait to read your analysis of Kevin's restaurant. Did he meet the vegetarian challenge?
K9,
What kind of paint did you use on that gate ?
Native - bwaahahahahah. That sounds like Texas to me. Go back it's beautiful. I think we're a very diverse country and it's worth visiting/exploring/etc.
Random - Yah! And Goddamn turnips too.
Drinky Cow - if you could pour vodka, you'd be worth more than that to ME.
Gnomey - really? You likey the beet? I do love borscht, but that's about it. Tastes like dirt.
Fishy - That's K9's theme song, but oh did I enjoy unplugging for a few days (with wifi, of course!) I did tape the sound of the birds/river and I have my videos.... but that smell? I'll just have to go back, I guess. :-) That sign was outside the window of where we had lunch. She was kind enough to explain it to me. I took out me saying "oh! I get it". doh. It's a beautiful passage and thought, isn't it?
Gah, I can't BELIEVE I forgot to ask the most important question of all! Did you get to go shooting?
Gnomey is a riot.
Moi - no, it was there purely as a varmit repellent. Now, if YOU had been there then YES there would have been some shooting. :-)
Aunty - don't you miss him blogging? I do.
B-Babe, on the moles (see above) I truly, really ain't kiddin' ya--K9 done tole me so herself!!
When can ya come back--I'se certain we need another summit.
Aunty - I have air miles and live in a rainy place. Pick a place with sunshine and I am there. And those moles? I heard about "chiggers" (spelling?) but no moles.
You totally need a t-shirt with "Nobody's gonna eat it, it's a goddamn beet" on it. That was a genius follow-up to the reading of the scriptures there. Total genius.
You're video is awesome. I got over-excited when the chickens rushed over. It just looked great. Can I come with you next time?
Many hugs.
Boxer: Bears don't eat beets. I know.
Thanks for taking me on the trip to Chicory! What a nice life K9 has: art, nature, fresh eggs and good friends!
I agree with you about the smell memories...food eaten and smell remind me just as much of people and times past as photos~and I also agree about our country being beautiful. I love my UP Michigan!
When are we going to read about the TOP Chef restaurant experience?
PS: Christmas with Coco!!!
